This data set contains the global forest cover fraction derived from observations and products of the MODIS Sensor aboard both, TERRA and AQUA platforms. Data of an entire year are used to come up with a high-quality annual composite of the percentage tree or forest cover fraction. For this fraction the main vegetation type considered are trees; 100% forest cover fraction mean that the grid cell is entirely covered by forest; 0% forest cover fraction mean that the grid cell does not contain any forest. This does not mean, however, that this grid cell is not vegetated; it can still be covered by 100 % with meadows / grassland / cropland or mosses & lichens.
Because of this we have added a separate data layer comprising the percentage vegetation cover fraction (VCF) based on the MODIS land cover data set. The percentage VCF was obtained by taking surface types 1 -12 and 14 of the above-mentioned data set.
This is version 1 of this data set provided in MODIS collection 5, downloaded from the data server in August 2013.
Data were downloaded in geoTIFF format with 250 m grid cell resolution, organized in tiles of 16° latitude x 12° longitude (exept the southern most tiles: 12° latitude and the northern most tiles: 6° latitude). Data were interpolated into a Climate Modeling Grid (CMG) with 0.05° grid cell resolution, forming one global data set per year, which is stored in netCDF format.
Attention!!! Neither the original data set not the one offered here contains data south of 60°S or north of 70°N!
This data set has been updated in our data base on Dec. 19, 2013.
